Foundation Chair’s Report - 2011

“A little neglect may breed mischief… for want of a nail, the shoe was lost; for want of a shoe, the horse was lost; for want of a horse the rider was lost.”

                                                                                                                                Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

We look back with pride on a year of accomplishments.  Our special event income, bequests, general donations and investment income has exceeded $1.45 million. While this is one measure of success, I prefer to measure success by other means.

Growth in our bequest income means our Planned Giving committee is functioning well. Growth in our investments and control of our expenses means our finance and investment review committees are functioning well. Growth in our special events revenue means our staff and legions of dedicated volunteers are functioning well. It also signals that our Development Committee is targeting and recognizing our donors, keeping us on our strategic plan and ensuring that our events are cost effective.  The tremendous support from donors to our first Radiothon and other on-going events like Cash Cow, Curl for a Cause and Hit it for Health confirms your Foundation has maintained its relevance, achieved capable stewardship recognition and is important to the communities we seek to serve. I count the smiles on the faces of our costumed supporters at Jeans and Gems Western theme night as another measure of success. Our partnerships with local businesses grow and improve- yet another measure. We do it well and, we have fun!

Over the course of the year your Foundation has contributed upwards of $650,000.00 to equipment purchases, facility upgrades, staff recruitment and training. Moreover, commitments have been made for additional funding in the coming year. Alice Leverman and her work partners at South Shore Health work hard to maintain equipment, streamline processes and maximize funding from other sources. We know when Alice sends our Board her requests for funding; the needs are real and the equipment vital to the delivery of the enhanced health care at Fishermen’s Memorial and South Shore Regional Hospitals.

On behalf of the Board, thank you to all of you who have supported us.

There can be no rewards without effort. Thank you to our Board, Committee members and Volunteers for your hard work and dedication.  A special word of thanks goes to four key people -three of whom are our staff: Bernadette Jordan, Belinda Smith, and our Director, Arleen Stevens. Each of these ladies brings unique talents to the Foundation and enormous energy to their positions. We are fortunate, as a skills based Board to have members who are leaders in their professions. Our Treasurer, Jamie Ernst donates his time and considerable talent. More than once, he has travelled the extra mile.

We work together even when we work alone.
